Healthy Skin 101

Learn how to achieve healthy looking skin with our tips below.

1. The Basics

People often think you need to be using an extensive skin care routine to have immaculate skin and that just isn’t the case. A 45-step skincare routine that you are struggling to maintain every day is probably not sustainable. What is important is that you choose the right skin care for your needs and use it consistently to get the best results. It’s crucial to ensure you are working on the barrier function of your skin first, which is the roof tile of your skin, before you start adding more and more serums.

Start with the basics first:

  • Cleanser
  • Treatment serum/s
  • Moisturiser
  • SPF

Once you have nailed a basic skin care routine & are doing it pretty consistently, that’s when you can start implementing a few extra serums, eye creams and masks. To find out which products are best for your skin it is best to have a consultation with a skin specialist. To find your nearest JMSR clinic contact info@janmariniaustralia.com.au

2. Clinical Skincare

Have you ever wondered about the difference between department store skincare and clinical skincare brands such as Jan Marini Skin Research? The main difference is the quality of ingredients, delivery systems & efficacy. Whilst mass market skincare has its place, it is often entry level, meaning it might not do any harm but it might not do much good either. Any active ingredients are usually in such low concentrations as to be largely ineffective. Individual consultation is carried out by a salesperson, rather than a trained skin therapist, and post-sale guidance is non-existent. When you purchase clinical skincare, it will be prescribed by professional skin therapists who have studied skin structure and function. Not only are they more qualified to prescribe you products that will be best for your skin type & concern, you will also achieve better results and will save on self-serve trial and error.

3. Professional Treatments

To accelerate the results of your clinical skin care daily routine and take things to the next level, include periodic professional treatments. Think of professional treatments like your gym workout and skincare as your healthy diet. If you are really wanting to see a big change in a short period of time (3-6 months), visiting your local JMSR clinic for monthly or fortnightly treatments is key. Results can take time, so be realistic. Don’t go in there and expect miracles after one treatment. With that said, a great skin therapist will create a personalised treatment plan for you that will work on repairing your foundations and then treating your main concerns. Once your skin is in a great place, it is still recommended to have skin treatments periodically to maintain results and don’t forget that home care regime too.

Extra tips

Retinol - When starting on retinol, slow and steady wins the race! Retinol increases skin cell turnover and clears follicular congestion. When implemented too quickly you can end up with a retinoid response - think sensitive, itchy, red skin with or without pimples. Every second night or third for the first few weeks when starting a new retinol is key to acclimating your skin. Consistency is key - Healthy skin requires commitment, not a miracle! If you are only going to use your products every now and again, you won’t see much change. Using your skincare consistently morning and night is the best way to achieve great results.

Hydrate don’t exfoliate your dry skin - Generally when someone has dry skin, the first thing they want to do is exfoliate it off however the reason why it is dry is due to lack of hydration, so exfoliation will only make it more dry. Instead, hydrate your skin with products such as Hyla3D Face Serum or Hyla3D Face Cream – both contain a patented combination of Hyaluronic Acid plus peptides and antioxidants.

Purging - When starting on clinical products there is a potential for follicle purging. Purging is when your skin follicles have become congested over time – whether obvious or not - and may breakout as the follicle lining is shed. Stay consistent with your skincare and this will subside in a short time. Do speak to your skin therapist if you have any concerns along the way.

Diet - This is a big one! Healthy skin isn’t just about what you are applying on the surface. It also comes down to what you are consuming daily. What we eat and drink directly affects the condition of our skin cells and their healthy function. It’s important your diet includes essential fatty acids (think oily fish, seeds & nuts) and leafy and cruciferous greens to mop up free radicals. It’s also good to reduce alcohol intake and increase your water intake. Eat mostly wholefoods and a varied diet. Prepare fresh meals rather than takeaway or pre-cooked foods. If you are doing all the right things with treatments and skincare and still not seeing results, it’s time to look at your diet and question if that may be impacting your skin.
